South Lake Tahoe

Situated on the California and Nevada state line, South Lake Tahoe dominates the Sierra Nevada mountains with a massive freshwater basin and striking granite peaks. As the largest alpine lake in the country, the entire Lake Tahoe region is a year-round playground for families and adventure seekers in the fresh mountain air.

On the southern shore, South Lake Tahoe blends its historic charm as the lake’s oldest city with the modern conveniences of a premier recreational destination. From world-class skiing in the winter to boating in the summer, venturing out on hiking trails, or exploring over 50 miles of dedicated cycling paths, South Lake Tahoe is a top vacation spot. Plus, in being closer to Nevada than its northern counterpart, many visitors to South Lake Tahoe also enjoy the thrill of trying their luck at casinos just over the state line.

From indigenous peoples to mountain explorers and from trappers to timber cutters and Olympians, Lake Tahoe carries a significant history. Home to the native Washoe prior to the California Gold Rush of the 19th century, the Lake Tahoe basin has always drawn people to its raw beauty and inviting shores. In the 1960s, the entire Tahoe basin was thrust onto the international stage when North Lake Tahoe hosted the Winter Olympics. Today, over 20 world-class ski resorts towering around the lake feature top-tier downhill and cross-country skiing opportunities.

Visitors to South Lake Tahoe will certainly line-up for the 2.4 mile gondola ride up the mountain, rising from the base camp at Heavenly Village. Rising from 6000 to 9000 feet, the Heavenly Mountain Gondola transports eager skiers and snowboarders in the winter, along with summer weekend thrill seekers. Don’t miss a trip on the gondola for incredible views of the lake and the surrounding Sierra Nevada mountains!

South Lake Tahoe is an ideal base camp for outdoor adventure and family-friendly activities in the Sierra Nevadas!
