Maine Lakes & Mountains

Away from the rugged coastline, towering pine trees and awe-inspiring mountain tops provide a scenic backdrop to pristine lakes and rivers in the heart and western expanses of Maine. Visitors choose Central and Western Maine as spots to unplug from city life and reconnect with the outdoors. In exploring these areas, you will find the Central Western region - home to the stunning Moosehead Lake and the charming town of Greenville - belongs to the picturesque Maine Highlands. This contrasts with the broader Western Maine area, often celebrated for its breathtaking Lakes and Mountains.

Western Maine

Western Maine features miles of hiking trails, exceptional ski slopes, and abundant wildlife waiting right outside your door. This part of Maine attracts families and adventurers, offering incredible mountain ranges and glacial lakes, along with a rich logging and maritime history. Throughout the 19th century, timber from these dense forests built ships and shaped the nation's early growth. You can see this heritage in historic logging camps, preserved rail lines, and local museums.

The Sunday River Region, located in Newry, is a top destination for visitors to Western Maine. With dynamic year-round recreation, the Sunday River Region features 870 acres of skiable terrain along 139 trails. Beyond winter, the surrounding mountains become a playground for mountain biking, zip lining, and hiking in the Mahoosuc Mountains.

Maine Highlands

The Moosehead Lake region in the Highlands offers a distinctly different side of Maine - one defined by expansive wilderness, mountain views, and a deep connection to the outdoors. Centered around Greenville and Moosehead Lake, this region is known for its natural beauty, wide-open spaces, and a pace that encourages visitors to slow down and fully unplug.

The Moosehead and Greenville Region sits at the rugged heart of the Maine woods. Moosehead Lake is the largest lake in the state. It offers exceptional fishing, boating, and guided moose-watching tours. Greenville serves as the ideal starting point for spectacular seaplane rides and remote wilderness excursions.

Come experience the beauty of the woods and mountains for yourself and discover the many facets of Maine.
