About

One of the top draws on a Santa Rosa Beach vacation is the Timpoochee Trail. While the name conjures a sandy path winding through a pine-filled forest, this 18.5 paved route follows the iconic 30A. The trail attracts joggers, bikers, and walkers and connects the seaside communities along this stretch of the panhandle.

The trail is named for Chief Timpoochee Kinnard, an Euchee leader connected to the region's early history. The pathway runs past white dunes, state parks, inland lakes, and pine forests. The western edge of the trail begins near Topsail Hill Preserve State Park, where HI 98 and 30A converge. The path stretches east, passing through Dune Allen, Blue Mountain, Grayton, WaterColor, Seaside, Seagrove, Seacrest, Alys Beach, and Rosemary Beach.

As tourism grew and 30A became more congested, the paved multi-use Timpoochee Trail provided a safer means for vacationers to walk and bike to the various beaches. It supports the laid-back 30A rhythm: ride to breakfast, stop for a beach photo, pause near a dune lake, then roll toward lunch.

The trail is as unique as the beach communities it connects. For a more tranquil experience, explore the trail between Grayton and Blue Mountain Beach. Another less-congested spot is from Seagrove, home to 30A Bike Rental, to Seacrest. Conversely, the stretch between Watercolor and Seaside offers boutique-filled town centers, food trucks, and local restaurants.

One tip to keep in mind is that the trail crosses several busy intersections. Thankfully, a signal beside the path can be activated, making for a faster, safer crossing.

Whether you're seeking an early morning jog or a short bike ride, the Timpoochee Trail offers a fun, safe route along 30A, connecting you to parks, beaches, and restaurants.

Timpoochee Trail: Fun Facts & Cool Features

As you've no doubt concluded, the best feature of this pathway is its variety. For a long day on a bike, ride tip to tip and take in the 18.5 miles of scenery. The Timpoochee Trail also works for families with kids who prefer a shorter stretch in Seaside or WaterColor, stopping at food trucks or lunch at Great Southern Cafe.

Because the trail is busy, it's not ideal for road cyclists who prefer a pace above 15 MPH. While some portions are less congested, like the stretch from Grayton to Blue Mountain, you will find 30A the better choice. And the earlier you roll, the better. You'll beat rush hour traffic (yes, some folks have to work!) and the heat.

As we've alluded, the scenery changes from mile to mile. For those who enjoy rolling terrain, explore Blue Mountain Beach westward to Ed Walline Regional Beach. The trail snakes through Blue Mountain, passing inland lakes and shops, to the intersection of HI 339, where boutiques, restaurants, and access to Ed Walline Regional Beach.

The best spot for family-friendly rides is Seaside, home to colorful cottages, food spots, and a town-center scene. Rosemary is also popular, marking the far eastern tip of the trail with its upscale community and tree-lined boulevards.

A section of the trail that exudes an up-scale Mediterranean vibe, head west from Rosemary into Alys Beach, where palms line 30A and whitewashed buildings and mansions dot the area.

If nature is your thing, explore Grayton Beach, home to Western Lake, where white dunes mark the southern horizon and brackish waters fan to the north. Veer off the trail into Grayton Beach State Park and explore the dunes and shorelines.

Another cool feature is how the trail supports a car-light vacation day. Parking can be a nightmare on 30A, so biking or walking lets you have a stress-free time reaching breakfast spots, beach access, and shops.

Whether you're seeking to log miles for an upcoming race or want to pedal to the nearby coffee shop, the Timpoochee Trail is your connecting point on your Santa Rosa Beach vacation.
