About
While restaurants on the Emerald Coast come and go as frequently as a Gulf thunderstorm, only a few have stood the test of time. One such eatery is Bud & Alley's in Seaside, which has served fresh seafood with jaw-dropping sunset views since 1986. Further adding to its legacy, Southern Living listed this dining hotspot as one of The 17 Most Legendary Restaurants in Florida. To miss coming here is like not sinking your toes in the Emerald Coast's sugar-white sand!
It all started with two 24-year-old surfing buddies who loved good food and good company. Dave Rauschkolb and Scott Witcoski opened Bud & Alley's in 1986, back when Seaside had only twelve houses. The name came from an unlikely source — Dave's dachshund, Bud, and Scott's cat, Alley. While whimsical at the time, the doxie motif stuck and has been incorporated into Seaside's popular merchandise.
Scott brought culinary credentials honed at his father's Destin restaurant, while Dave handled front-of-house. Together, they created a serious kitchen inside a laid-back Gulf-front setting.
After nearly two decades as co-owners, Scott retired, and Dave carried the torch forward. He also expanded to open a neighboring pizza and taco place in Seaside, along with the highly praised Black Bear Bread Co. in Grayton Beach.
When visiting, make sure you take part in a 30A tradition at the Rooftop Bar and the expanded Sky Deck. Visitors flock here before sunset to sip drinks and dine on the elevated, covered deck. When the sun slips over the Gulf's horizon, a salvaged 1888 cast-iron bell is rung to mark the moment.
Come for the sunset, the cuisine, and drinks, and discover firsthand why Bud & Alley's is "legendary."
Vibe
Rising from the Gulfside of 30A is the restaurant's crisp white building with its iconic upper decks. Here, you'll have the best water views in Seaside and perhaps the entire Panhandle.
The downstairs dining area features warm wood tones and linen-covered tables. While elegant, the space offers Gulf views in a comfortable yet subtly sophisticated setting.
For an even more laid-back ambiance, head upstairs to the open Rooftop Bar and expanded Sky Deck. Here, diners gather for the daily sunset-watching ritual that is synonymous with a 30A vacation. The unobstructed views of the turquoise waters and the vast horizon make for a memorable dining experience.
No matter where you dine, the ambiance connects you to the coast's free-flowing spirit.
Bud & Alley's: Menu & Drinks
With its Gulf-to-table cooking and various breakfast, lunch, and dinner options, there's never a bad time to eat at Bud & Alley's. For the sake of time, we'll focus on the dinner menu.
The crab cakes are highly praised for being lightly seasoned, jam-packed with crab meat, and served with just enough sauce to complement rather than overwhelm.
Another seafood hit is the Grilled Gulf Fish of the Day. The meal comes with creamed corn, warm potato salad, grilled green onions, and a Beurre Blanc sauce.
If seafood isn't your thing, there is an 8-oz filet mignon, airline chicken, and various salad options.
The dining options at the Rooftop Bar are limited, and hours are seasonal, so call ahead. The seafood gumbo is a popular choice, as are the crab cake, calamari, oysters, and shrimp. Also available are some salads, a grilled fish sandwich, and an Angus hamburger.
The bar menu features cold, craft cocktails that pair naturally with salt air and sunshine.
The wine program earned a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, meaning the selection goes well beyond what you'd expect at a casual beachfront restaurant.
The restaurant's website slogan sums it up best: "Good Food. Good People. Good Times." Whether you opt for the casual eats at sunset or dine indoors for a more upscale experience, Bud & Alley's lives up to the hype!
