Overview
Sip morning coffee on the covered porch as pines filter the light across nine acres of Sonoma countryside, four miles from Occidental and five from Sebastopol's tasting rooms. This 2021-built single-story home sleeps 5 across two queen bedrooms and a sofa bed, with a working artist studio on the property and the Russian River close enough for an afternoon paddle.
Spend mornings birdwatching at the on-property aviary or wandering the nine acres on foot, afternoons tasting through Occidental (four miles) and Sebastopol (five miles) or kayaking the Russian River, and evenings back on the front porch with a glass of Sonoma red as the light goes gold over the pines. Bodega Bay sits 14 miles west and Healdsburg 18 miles north when you want to range farther. Settle into the open great room where forest light pours through the windows and a cream sofa anchors the gathering space — built new in 2021, the home feels uncluttered and easy to live in. Pour a glass at the granite-topped island while dinner pulls together on the gas range, with two bar stools keeping the cook in the conversation and a rustic dining table waiting just steps away. Step out to your own working artist studio on the property when inspiration strikes — previous guests are welcome to use it during their stay. Cooling: cross-breezes through the forest canopy only — no central AC. OUTDOOR LIVING Claim an Adirondack lounger on the covered front porch as evening settles over the pines, then fire up the Weber gas grill for dinner under the trees. Nine private acres of trails and the aviary are yours to explore. Place was peaceful, clean, simple, remote feeling while being 10 min from downtown.
Very clean and neat house, and the property is secluded and very peaceful. Easily accessible to Sebastopol as well.
We enjoyed our stay at Goat Hill. Things to know: The home is just a pre-fab, but it's totally functional. The layout is perfect for a vacation home and is outfitted with the essentials that are expected with any vacation home. The owner is an artist and a couple of pieces of the owner's art are displayed on the walls. The decor is minimalist, in a good way. On our visit, the aviary did not contain birds. The aviary was one of the things that most appealed to us in the property description, so that was a bummer. However, the property is a natural wonderland and we saw many birds from the porch while we ate breakfast. By the time we left we had practically developed a relationship with the resident red-shouldered hawk. For the first couple days of our trip we also got to watch sheep and goats play and graze which was really lovely. Not sure what happened to them on our last day but they were gone from the yard and barn by the end of our stay. Someone would periodically come by the home in a cart/vehicle, ostensibly to check on the animals and the property. We saw them but did not have an interaction. The water heater puts out only enough warm water for a single 15 minute shower at a time. The rental had garbage, recycling, and even compost right inside the kitchen, which was cool. The WiFi is really slow. Often web pages would just time out and we would have to try again later to get them to load. There is a bluetooth speaker in the living room which is a nice touch. No TV but who wants to go on vacation just to watch TV? In total, we would recommend Goat Hill and would be happy to stay there again!
We had a wonderful stay here! The property is absolutely serene and beautiful amongst the trees. The house had all the amenities needed along with open space and updated appliances. Plus the hosts were really helpful and responsive. It was perfect to have the option to cozy up inside or take a quick 15 minute drive to downtown Sebastopol where there are plenty of cute shops and restaurants. There's also lots of hikes in the area. I could not recommend this stay enough.
Just outside Occidental, and full of pines and redwoods. Read the small print, though, as it matters: landscapers often came to the place. 2-3 times they had chainsaws, cans of gasoline; took 2 days of tinkering with a plastic sided pond leaving truck on property. Cats going by: hardly what one anticipates with a rural retreat. I was there for the birds. Imagine the joy.
Loved the property; only concern it was unseasonably hot during our stay and while it didn’t have ac once we opened the windows and turned on the whole house fan it go much better. Loved having the goats near by; got concerned when we noticed a head or two stuck in the fence opening. We were able to release them. A not wouldn’t been helpful if that was what we should do or let them get themselves out. They were adorable!
